4 Organization Tips for a Walk-in Closet

You might find that getting your walk-in closet well-organized is a challenge. It’s a project worth undertaking, though, because a walk-in closet that’s organized and well-appointed can be more than just storage – it can be something of an oasis, where you’re surrounded by the clothes, shoes, accessories, and other items that you chose and like.  All you need is a closet organization plan to follow.

  • Declutter and Purge Before You Organize
  • Divide Your Closet by Function
  • Choose and Use The Best Closet Organizers
  • Add Something Extra by Decorating

Getting started is the hardest part, but once that’s done, you’ll find your organization project gaining momentum with every step!

Declutter and Purge Before You Organize

If your closet is a disorganized mess, the best way to start is almost always by removing unneeded items. First remove everything so you can get all the clutter out of the closet and look it over to decide what to purge from your closet.

Getting rid of clothes is rarely easy, but there are guidelines that can give you an idea of what to purge and what to keep. For example, Minimalism Made Simple suggests that you purge clothes that don’t fit anymore, that are worn out, that you just don’t like, that you’ve outgrown, or that you can’t wear more than once. These are good ways to reduce a lot of the excess in your closet, and maybe even make room for new things.

Divide your clothes and accessories into groups: items to keep, items to donate, and items to throw away. When you’ve finished, remove the donation and trash groups and you can move on with organizing your closet.

Divide Your Closet by Function

Before you return your items to your closet, take a good look at the empty closet and think about how you may be able to section it off into different areas that serve different functions. Do you share the closet? If so, a simple division might be to divide it down the middle – one side for you and one for your closet partner. Do you have it all to yourself? Perhaps you want one wall for hanging clothes and one for shelves and folded clothes, and the back wall used to store display shoes. Maybe you’ll store hanging clothes and folded clothes on both sides, but you’ll divide the clothes instead: professional outfits on one side, casual clothes on the other, and dressy clothes in the back of the closet.

It's up to you how you decide to make the divisions. The point is to find a system for categorizing your clothes that makes sense to you so you always know where to find what you need.

Choose and Use The Best Closet Organizers

Closet organizers can be a number of different things – they’re accessories that help you store and organize your closet. There are plenty of different closet organizers available for your clothes and accessories. You can add additional hanging rods if you need to. You can also add a valet rod for picking out the next day’s outfits. Installing shelves can give you more space for folded clothes, as can a dresser with drawers. Shoe shelves or other shoe organizers keep shoes off the floor, where they’re likely to get jumbled and keep pairs together as well.

You can go beyond just the basics, too. Install racks that hold ties, belts, or scarves. Use jewelry trays or jewelry organizers to store and display jewelry. You may use baskets for hair accessories or socks, or store out-of-season clothing in bins with lids. The nice thing about a walk-in closet is that you have more room to work with than you would in a regular closet, so you have plenty of room to choose the organizers you need most.

Add Something Extra by Decorating

A closet is a storage space, yes. But that doesn’t mean that it needs to be boring or plain, does it? Your closet is more or less where you start your day, choosing the clothes that you need for the upcoming hours. Why not make it a positive, attractive, refreshing place to be?

Sometimes, decorating a closet is as simple as looking at the things you bring into it. Things like bags, shoes, hats, and jewelry can be decorative. Install hooks to artfully hang hats or display jewelry. Stand beautiful handbags on top of shelves or storage boxes. Look into clear shoe boxes to display your favorite, colorful shoes in a fun way.

Consider whether you should improve the lighting in your walk-in closet. There are spot-lighting options that can add extra illumination to an item or area, and you should be sure that your closet is well-lit enough to allow you to easily see and find items. You should also add mirrors. If you’re going to do all the work of creating a place for your clothes and accessories, you should be able to model them there.

If your walk-in closet is large enough, you can even add seating. There are many benches and ottomans that are comfortable and decorative. Many even come with included storage, giving you extra space when you decide that you need it.

Conclusion

Organizing your walk-in closet might be challenging, but the payoff is safe, neat storage for your clothes, and a space that’s optimized for your specific needs and wants. Take your time and do it right, and you will be able to enjoy the result for a long time to come.
