Find out how to put your plan into action by following the tips below.

The Basics of Organization & Storage

A few basic tips can go a long way, and they can help you prioritize your needs. Is one area of your home in need of more thorough organization than another? Start there and then work your way through your home based on which spaces need the most work and which ones need the least.

Remember, you want to maximize the space you have, so the first step is to declutter. Consider having a keep pile, a donate pile, and a trash pile. Once you have the clutter out of the way, it is time to start organizing. TheSpruce.com recommends a few basics to help you get started:

  • Use square, plastic, airtight storage containers to maximize space.
  • Try items that can nest within themselves.
  • Buy containers based on the sizes you need.
  • Choose where you want to store items in your home

Clutter-Free Kitchen & Pantry

Of all the spaces in your home, the kitchen is one area that can get cluttered and chaotic quickly. First, go through the cabinets and remove old or outdated food items. Bugs really like dry goods, rice, cereal, and other common kitchen items, so be sure to store these products properly.

Plastic containers are one of the simplest and most readily available ways to store food. They come in a variety of colors and sizes, are airtight, and easy to label. You can also choose clear glass containers if you want to be able to see what you have inside. Plus, pantry pests & moisture won't stand a chance!

Canned food can be organized by type and placed in special can corrals that utilize vertical space. You will be able to see what you have at a glance and won’t have to worry about a can of green beans landing on your foot.

Sparkling Bathrooms

Bathrooms tend to be last on the list of rooms to organize.  It is easy to just toss brushes, makeup, or other miscellaneous items into drawers or cabinets. Eventually, you won’t be able to find what you want when you want it, and that usually happens as you are rushing out the door. Give these bathroom storage tips a try:

  • Add hooks – These make great use of wall space for hanging towels instead of having a large towel rack.
  • Over the door storage – If you have a little space above your bathroom door, why not create a cool storage area for towels like Good Housekeeping suggests?
  • Use baskets or bins – Keep the items under your sink organized with storage bins.
  • Spinning storage – Keep your most used cleaning supplies on a Lazy Susan in the bathroom cabinet for easy access.
  • Keep similar items together such as hairdryers, styling tools, makeup, and first-aid kits.
  • Get an extra curtain rod – Install the rod inside your shower to hang loofas, washcloths, and small caddies of essentials on S-hooks.
Bedroom

Beautiful Bedrooms

Your bedroom is where you go to rest and relax. Having extra clutter on the dresser or clothes spilling out of the closet creates chaos. However, you can easily create a calmer space with minimal effort.

As you start to go through your bedroom, begin with organizing your storage spaces first, such as dressers and drawers. Remove the items you do not want anymore, and then you can start to tackle other areas of the room. This will also help keep organization from becoming too overwhelming.

Under the bed space is often overlooked as viable storage but think again. It is great because nobody can see it, yet you can get to it easily. Some ideas of items to store in sealed bins under the bed include wrapping paper, spare bed sheets, or miscellaneous trinkets.

Keep dirty clothes off the floor and in a hamper. If you don’t have a lot of space to work with, think about keeping your dirty clothes basket in your laundry room instead of the bedroom. This will also help to keep out bad odors.

Functional Closets

Once you have cleared out the clutter from the room, set your sights on the closet. Consider storing your shoes in bins or on an organizer. Hang clothes neatly and color coordinate. For folded items like pants, place them in a bin turned on its side. You will be able to see exactly what you have quickly.

Are you always running late and never know what to wear? Having an organized closet will help. You can add valet hooks inside to hang your outfit for the next day. Talk about a time saver!

Storage bins and baskets will help keep larger items contained. Hanging brooms, mops, and other similar items to the walls of your closet is a great use of vertical space. For kids closets, one easy DIY idea is to add rolling carts for toys and art supplies. It will be much easier for your kiddos to maintain a tidier space.

Organized Garage

Where do you put the items you don’t know where to store? The garage! Typically, your garage ends up being a catchall for things like cleaning supplies, seasonal décor, sporting equipment, and tools. Here are few simple garage organization tips:

  • Storage bins – Depending on what you are storing, large, airtight storage bins are great for garage organization. They keep out pests and moisture and are easy to label and stack.
  • Slatwall panels – Use the abundant wall space in your garage to your advantage by installing slatwall panels. These are great for storing and showcasing your tools or sporting equipment.
  • Ceiling racks or hooks – Hang bicycles from your garage ceiling to keep them off the floor and out of the way.
  • Don’t store certain items in your garage - These include, but are not limited to: family heirlooms, paint, gasoline, wood, propane tanks, paper products, and food.

Conclusion

Having the organized home you have always wanted starts with learning the basics, creating a game plan, and then beginning the organization process. Remember, start by decluttering your home one room at a time. Take donations out as soon as possible. Once you have your space clutter-free, you can start organizing it how you see fit and with the storage solutions that work best for you.
